Or should we say Philo effect? After all, you don’t see fashion’s elite clamouring to wear the high-octane designs that emerged from the house in the early noughties. Most of us who work in the fashion industry dream of wearing head to toe Céline: specifically, anything created from the inimitable vision of Phoebe Philo.
And a visionary is what she is. When she was appointed as creative director at Céline in 2008, she didn’t do what most designers do at a historic fashion house – reference the past – but instead embarked upon an entirely new direction. She created ultra modern clothes she wanted to wear. And it seems she wasn’t alone.
Her collections immediately resonated with women: the Pre Spring 2010 and Spring Summer 2010 collections, with their clean-lined, neutral toned and refreshingly minimalist aesthetic, set off a chain reaction in fashion that has yet to slow down.
Been wearing Stan Smiths? Thank Philo. Wearing leather trim? Philo again. Birkenstocks? Slouchy trousers? Roll necks? Philo. She offers women a practical approach to dressing that doesn’t buy into the sexualisation of womenswear, and frankly we’re all looking and feeling better for it. Clothes which feel comfortable make the wearer look comfortable – and nothing is cooler or more sophisticated than a women who’s relaxed in her own skin.
That’s not something you just can get teetering around in six inch stilettoes and a bodycon dress. The Céline woman has interesting places to go and she’s going to get there in skater flats and an impeccably stylish, practical coat thank you very much.
